Retail sales in Switzerland experienced a notable 1.5% year-on-year increase in September 2025, surpassing market predictions of just a 0.3% rise and bouncing back from the previous month's 0.4% decline, which was later adjusted upward. This growth was primarily fueled by a significant boost in sales of information and communication technology equipment, which surged 19.9% compared to 14.9% in August. Additionally, sectors such as food, beverages, and tobacco saw a 1.3% increase, recovering from a 1.5% decline, while non-food products grew by 2.5%, up from 1.9%. Notably, online and mail order sales also climbed by 3.5%, improving from a previous 1.6% growth. Although sales of cultural and recreational goods fell slightly, the decline was less steep at -1.4% compared to -1.8% in August. Conversely, there was a downturn in service stations, which saw a decrease of 0.5% following a 2.7% rise previously, and in household equipment and furniture, which dropped by 0.3% after a 2% increase. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the retail trade sector grew by 0.6% in September, rebounding from a 0.2% decline in the previous month. Excluding fuel, retail activity marked a 2% increase compared to the preceding year, a significant recovery from the 0.1% drop recorded in August.
