Core retail sales in New Zealand rose 0.9 percent in the first quarter of 2011, Statistics NZ reported on Wednesday.

Overall retail sales increased a seasonally adjusted 2.0 percent for the quarter, the agency said. It was the largest increase since the March 2007 quarter.

Motor vehicle related sales were the largest contributors to the overall Q1 increase, Statistics NZ said, with motor vehicle and parts retailing up 5.9 percent and fuel retailing up 5.6 percent.

The volume of total retail sales was up 0.9 percent on quarter, the biggest volume increase since the December 2009 quarters. Sales volumes declined in each of the two preceding quarters.

The volume of core retail sales was up 0.7 percent.

Geographically, increases were seen in all regions except in Canterbury, where total retail sales were down 2.2 percent following the February 22 earthquake.
