Hong Kong's private sector employment increased 3% or 74,400 persons in June from the previous year, the Census and Statistics Department said on Monday.

The selected industries as a whole employed totaled 2.52 million persons in June. Among the total employment, the import and export trade engaged 498,300 persons, followed by the retail trade engaging 240,800 persons. The professional and business services, excluding cleaning and similar services, employment totaled 236,200 persons and the food and beverage services employment was 215,500 persons.

Meanwhile, the total number of vacancies was 45,220 in July, showing an increase of 43% or 13,690 over a year ago. Among the total vacancies, 5, 860 were from the industry of food and beverage services and 5,500 vacancies from the import and export trade.

Compared to the previous month, the seasonally adjusted total employment and total vacancies in the surveyed sectors increased by 0.2% and 4.1% respectively in June, the statistical office said.
