Japan’s foreign exchange reserves declined by USD 0.38 billion in July 2026, reaching a sixteen-month low of USD 1.287 trillion, down from USD 1.288 trillion in June and marking a second consecutive monthly decrease.

Foreign currency reserves totaled USD 1.090 trillion, comprising USD 927.33 billion in securities and USD 162.29 billion in deposits. Of these deposits, USD 161.85 billion were placed with foreign central banks and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Deposits with banks headquartered in Japan amounted to USD 407 million, while those with banks headquartered outside Japan came to USD 25 million.

Japan’s reserve position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was USD 11.38 billion, and its Special Drawing Rights (SDR) holdings were valued at USD 60.73 billion. Gold reserves stood at USD 109.52 billion. Other reserve assets totaled USD 15.86 billion, and other foreign currency assets were reported at USD 33.92 billion.
