Online sales during Thanksgiving and Black Friday in the U.S. rose to record high levels as shoppers rushed to take advantage of the deep discounts and purchased more on their mobile devices, indicating a promising beginning to the holiday season.

According to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at the 100 biggest U.S. retailers on the web, U.S. retailers generated a record $7.9 billion in online sales on Black Friday and Thanksgiving.

Adobe added that Cyber Monday is projected to take in $6.6 billion in internet sales, which would make it the the biggest U.S. online shopping date in record.

Data from commerce marketing company Criteo said 40 percent or almost half of Black Friday online purchases were made on mobile phones, higher compared to the 29 percent in the previous year.

During the days toward the holiday weekend, traditional retailers injected investments heavily on overhauling their websites and increasing deliver options, in anticipation of a decline in visits to traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Some stores reduced store inventories as well, in order to avoid any post-holiday liquidation that would affect profits.

According to retail analysts and consultants, televisions, laptops, toys and gaming consoles were some of the most heavily marked down products and the biggest sellers as well.
