Hong Kong stocks started the Wednesday trading action lower after overnight losses on Wall Street, with energy shares a weak spot after crude-oil futures gave up 1.2% during regular exchange in New York. The Hang Seng Index relinquished 0.4% to fall at 21,844.04 in early moves, while the mainland-China-following Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dipped 0.6%, but the Shanghai Composite undid opening losses to jump 0.2%. Among the energy majors, PetroChina Co. and Cnooc Ltd. each missed 1.3%, while China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. -- better known as Sinopec-- drifted 1.4% down in Hong Kong. Over in Shanghai, retreats for Sinopec and PetroChina were lighter, at 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively. Hong Kong-listed casino shares were mixed, with Wynn Macau Ltd. climb 1.4%, but MGM China Holdings Ltd. slumping 3.1% after recording a quarterly loss. Among the Hong Kong winners, Standard Chartered PLC spiked 0.9% even though it displays lesser income, as the smaller earnings were due to a write down on its Korean operations. On the Chinese mainland, real-estate majors obtain advances after China Vanke Co. reported a 22% increase in its first-half profit. Shares of Vanke spiked 1.7% in Shenzhen, while Poly Real Estate Group Co. skyrocketed 4.1% and Gemdale Corp. traded 3.8% greater in Shanghai.
