The Australian dollar reached its lowest level in 5 ½ years.

On Monday, the Aussie traded at 80.95 US cents from Friday’s 81.37 US cents.

The currency briefly slid to around 80.53 US cents Monday morning, its weakest since July 2009.

“Weak commodity prices and US dollar strength were continuing to weigh on the Australian dollar in 2015,” said Ricky Liu, Currency Dealer at Easy Forex.
