August saw a three-month slowdown in the average earnings growth in the UK, according to data released on Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics. For the three months leading up to August, average earnings before bonuses increased by 7.8%. While slower than the 7.9 percent increase observed in the three months leading up to July, the rate was in line with expectations. Still, this was among the highest annual growth rates since comparable data started to be collected in 2001. The average yearly increase in total pay, including bonuses, was only 8.1 percent, less than the projected 8.3 percent. The ONS stated that the NHS and one-time civil service payments in June, July, and August had an impact on the overall growth rate. Additional data from the statistical office revealed that from July to September, there were 43,000 fewer job openings, or 988,000 total. The level of vacancies fell for the fifteenth consecutive period, reaching its lowest point since the middle of 2021.
