Vietnam is poised to sign a "reciprocal trade agreement" with the United States in the near future, according to Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son. This development follows the commencement of a new negotiation phase in Washington, D.C. Son emphasized the importance of trust in fostering cooperation, which he believes is essential for mutual prosperity. "Vietnam is committed to enhancing cooperation with the United States," he stated during a US-Vietnam business summit in Hanoi, as reported by Reuters. Back in October, both nations agreed to finalize a trade agreement within weeks. This would maintain a 20% tariff on Vietnamese goods imported into the US, while providing exemptions for certain unspecified products. Recent statistics highlight that, in the first ten months of 2025, Vietnam achieved a trade surplus of USD 111 billion with the United States. Nonetheless, there was a 2.2% decrease in exports to the US from September to October 2025, amounting to USD 13.4 billion, likely due to the new tariffs. In 2024, exports to the United States comprised roughly 30% of Vietnam's GDP.
